Shares/Stock Buying different stocks in small volume

This is one trick that is advised by a broker friend of my nephew years ago. He said that buying stocks is like investing in a business, The more stocks you have then the more chances of gaining a profit.

For example I bought stocks in equal amounts of company A, B, C, D and E. Those 5 stocks would be my investment which I would wait for a stock to rise in price. When the price of C rises substantially then I sell for a small profit. But I again would buy another stock, say stock F. When another of my 5 stocks would gain a profit then I would sell. The question now is what if all the stocks will not rise in price?
