"Gustavo Petro," a former Leftist guerrilla rebel, won the Colombian presidential election and will take office on August 7. The biggest news, though, is that Petro has long supported bitcoin.

Bitcoin was referred to as a force of mutual trust against state and bank seizure in Petro's response to the Colombian Minister of Finance's tweet on December 26, 2017, in which the minister refused to acknowledge value of cryptocurrencies and bitcoin. Additionally, he exhorted El Salvador President Nayib Bukele to use green mining techniques in 2021.

Supporters of cryptocurrencies are currently claiming that Petro will make bitcoin legal in Colombia. However, there is also the theory that Petro backed Bitcoin in order to resist the government, but now he is government. Regarding crypto-related policy, his running mate and vice presidential pick Francia Márquez is also silent.

For Bitcoin supporters, there is chance, not guarantee, they must wait for Petro's financial decision, whatever the outcome.
