Ethereum developer Virgil Griffith sentenced for violating North Korean Sanctions

Virgil Griffith, an Ethereum developer, and hacker, has been sentenced to 63 months (five years and three months) in prison for violating North Korean sanctions.

Virgil Griffith, attended a crypto conference in North Korean capital Pyongyang in April 2019, where he advised the Kim Jong Un regime to use cryptocurrency and blockchain technology to evade US and UN sanctions.

US court (South District of New York) found Griffith guilty of violating the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). The law provides for a prison sentence of up to 20 years. But Griffith pleaded guilty, and agreed to a lesser sentence.

Griffith was arrested for this in Los Angeles in November 2019, although he was released on bail, but he served 10 months in custody, the custodial period will be counted as term served.
