Borax is a natural mineral that's been used for centuries to clean, remove stains and refresh fabrics.
Several household items include it, like laundry detergent, toothpaste, or even mouthwash.
Borax is actually sodium tetraborate decahydrate, which means it contains the chemical borate (BOH-righ). The name "borax" comes from the Latin word "borea," which means "bee."

Borax has been used as a cleaning agent since at least 2000 B.C. Egyptians used it to make mummies; Romans used it to make glass; and medieval Europeans used it as an antiseptic and insecticide. It was also used as a wood preservative in Europe until the 19th century when modern treatments replaced it with lime or chalk.

Today, borax is still popular because of its low cost, versatility in use and low toxicity compared with other cleaning agents like ammonia or bleach. Borax doesn't have any harmful effects on humans or animals if ingested over time but should never be swallowed whole because of its caustic nature (it contains sodium).
