The best way to build a good career is to get good at something, and then find people who are willing to pay you for it.
It sounds simple enough, but regretfully the world is not a perfect utopia. You have to be good at what you do or else no one will want you and your career will never get off the ground. And you can't just do anything and expect people to throw money at it because world doesn't work that way.
For example, let's say you want to pursue the career of a rapper. It's not enough to become a rapper and then hope that people will start throwing money at you. If you lack talent, no one will take notice of your rapping and thus, your career as a rapper doesn't take off. You have to be really good in order for people to recognize your skill and talent and then be willing to pay for it. And sometimes just being really good isn't enough; there are other factors that come into play that are out of your control, such as industry politics, the economy, etc.
