There are so many ways by which the writers can use to leverage out of their writing career. Some of the common ones are these;

1) Earning passive income through publishing of a book
Most authors that are really experienced and skilled on the writing of books based on the genres of their choices, can easily leverage their writing career through publishing of books.
Most authors earn passive in income in selling of books that were published along time ago.

2)Securing of employment in the journalism sector
Most qualified writers can be hired for permanent and pensionable jobs at the news and magazines publishers companies.

The second one is not possible because you need to follow a university field and get diploma for getting work. Like you are saying someone a web developer makes courses about hypnose and starts medical treatment for hypnose for the people that is against law. Even someone like a lawyer could not work as journalist except getting the graduation required from university otherwise even hairdresser could be tomorrow a journalist. Means only first one seems possible for everyone. That is writing a book and publish it in the domain where you are working as well. Like a doctor make a book about pigmentation.
