How to Properly Refill Your Transformer

The transformer oil in your power transformer must be periodically replaced to ensure the health of the transformer. If the oil is dirty or contaminated, it will not properly absorb heat from transformer components, leading to shorter equipment life and possible failure.

You should ensure you are in a safe environment, use your PPE and ground the transformer properly before operation.

To refill transformer oil, you will need a few tools:

- A filtering system with a high-speed pump
- A specialized filtration cart that is designed to meet OEM specifications for the transformer.
- For larger transformers, a mobile filtration system may be necessary

Once you have your tools, complete the following steps:

1. Drain all oil from the transformer into a storage tank. You should drain all oil until there is no liquid left and only cotton waste remains at the bottom of the tank.

2. Purge air and gas from the transformer by filling the tank up with new oil and draining it again. Repeat this step three times to ensure that all air has been removed from inside the tank.

3. Using an oil transfer pump, fill up each cell of your transformer with new oil until there are no bubbles left in any of them. Start by filling up the main cell first, then fill up each side cell individually until they are full and there are no bubbles left inside them.
