Is ultrasonography useful for detecting sports injuries?

If you damage your knee, shoulder, or ankle while jogging or playing with your child, you may be sent for an X-ray or an MRI. However, hospitals are increasingly employing in-room ultrasonography to assess sports and joint problems with less radiation exposure and a lower fee.

Ultrasound, commonly known as sonography, is an imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of inside body structures. This technology, best recognized for allowing us to see a baby in a pregnant mother's abdomen, can also allow us to detect soft tissues that an X-ray or MRI cannot, such as tendons or ligaments. Musculoskeletal ultrasonography, or MSK, can also be used to detect pinched nerves, aberrant growths, and even malignancies.

Diagnostic ultrasound is not offered in every clinic due to the additional training and experience required. Patients can get it in our new Frisco physical medicine and rehabilitation office because I have musculoskeletal ultrasound credentials from the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography.
