First of all, it is important to identify the main competitors in your industry; then you should analyze their website traffic by means of tools such as Google Analytics; after that try to find out what keywords they target for getting organic search traffic and which ones they don’t use at all; next conduct backlink analysis in order to understand their link building efforts or lack thereof; finally monitor search engine positions for relevant keywords. Such metrics as total visits, unique visitors, bounce rate and average time on site should be compared with your own in order to understand better how well (or badly) are they doing? Besides there exist some other useful tools like Google Keyword Planner SEMrush Ahrefs Moz Link Explorer etc., which may assist you during this process.
