What exactly is the main purpose of surveys?

I think surveys are conducted by companies that want feedback on their products and services. Surveys are use to find answers to specific and important questions. These questions are varied, cover a diverse range of topics, and can be asked in multiple formats. The following are main reasons for conducting surveys.
1. For uncovering answers. In a non-intimidating survey environment, you will learn about what motivates survey respondents and what is important to them, and gather meaningful opinions, comments, and feedback.
2. To start discussions. Gives your survey respondents an opportunity to discuss important key topics.
3. Base decisions on acquired information. Conducting surveys is an unbiased approach to decision-making. Don’t rely on “gut feelings” to make important business decisions. You can collect unbiased survey data and develop sensible decisions based on analyzed results.
4. Compare results. Survey results provide a snapshot of the attitudes and behaviors – including thoughts, opinions, and comments – about your target survey population. This valuable feedback is your baseline to measure and establish a benchmark from which to compare results over time.

I see survey as a medium used by organisations for the purposes of getting to interact with their customers, to know their customers thought consigning their products or services. It also give them the insight on how to improve their products or services in other to meet the taste of their customers.

The sole aim of survey is to get the feedback from customers or consumers of goods and services to enable the companies given out such surveys to know the next line of action in their policies or marketing strategies.
Surveys remain very important because they are the major tool for business development, it rather unfortunate that small businesses care less about taking surveys which affect their business once gradually. All businesses are expected to carry out surveys at Interval of time.

The main purpose of a survey is to gather feedbacks from consumers and customers about their goods, what they think about it and how best the product has been, if it's good or bad so they know if they are doing well on each product they make. So survey helps a company knows more about it's product.
