It is not uncommon to see people working offline in most African countries being underpaid. Most of them are not really employed but underemployed where they are paid lesser than what they give out. Some employers of labour despite paying meagre money still maltreat and delay salaries of their workers. The following may be the reasons for the arrant behavior.

Most employers of labour do not know how to differentiate between servant and slaves. They treat their workers just as if they were slaves. Most times, they delay their salaries and let them see their salaries as privilege instead of right.

There is no much help from government, there is no workers union. If government makes it mandatory for private workers not to pay below certain amount of money, there may be reduction in the ways owners maltreat their workers unjustly.

Most workers do not even know their rights. Thru see their employers as bosses and not really as contractors who will pay them for the jobs they do and whom may surfer if the the works are left undone.

Workers are not paid wages but salary. I wish people are paid in wages where they will be calculating the money to be received by workers based on hours and not days.

Unfortunately, this is not the conditions of Africa only. I live in an Asian country and in here this problem could also be found. The conditions are pretty same in Asian countries. I live in Pakistan and here an average person earns around $100 and some people earn $200. One of the main reasons why the salaries is so low is due to the fact that Pakistan and many African countries are not rich countries. The purchasing power of people is not so high. There are some people who make good amount of money, but they are very educated, experienced, and qualified. One of the other reason is the fact that jobs are very scarce and the demand of those jobs is very high.

This means there is a huge population of unemployed people and people have no problem working for very low rates. If you reject to work for low salary, then there will always be a really huge group of people willing for those exact rates. Poor countries have poor salary rates. In Pakistan, the average salary of a really hard working job is around $200 to $300 at its max. A qualified person might earn more because gradually his or her salary will increase, but this is the average amount of money a person makes inhere.
