This is an internet‐based industry creating virtual networks and communities for quick electronic communication and sharing of information. There are a lot of different types of social media platforms.

Namely, social networks, media sharing networks, discussion forums, bookmarking and content curation networks, consumer review networks, blogging and publishing networks, and social shopping networks. Examples of sites for social networking are Facebook, LinkedIn, or Google+. Microblogging platforms include Twitter and Tumblr. Sites for photo sharing like Instagram, Snapchat, Pinterest. Video sharing networks YouTube or Tiktok. Social media is a huge community bringing peoples, brands, and companies together through websites and applications. The power of social media is the ability to connect and share information with anyone on earth, or with many people simultaneously.

Benefits of using social media

Social Media provides social good. It creates a platform for people to communicate from all over the world online. People or brands can share pictures and videos. You can video chat with old friends, relatives, and family members to stay connected. Social networks can be used as a helpful outlet for shy people, people suffering from social anxiety, social phobia, or autism.

This channel can also be used to benefit businesses by bringing brand awareness, customer service, engaging with customers, and promoting eCommerce. Some discussion forums like Reddit and Quora provide a network to find, discuss, and share news, information, and opinions. These are sites where people go to find out what everyone’s talking about and weigh in on it. It’s a good place to learn and develop your skillsets. There are other sites like Pinterest or Flipboard where people can discover, share, save, and discuss new and trending content. These networks are a perfect platform to find creativity and inspiration. On consumer review people can find, review, and share information about brands, products, and services, even restaurants, travel destinations, and many more.


Social media’s harmful influence

Using social media can promote a number of psychological issues that can negatively affect your mental health and emotional wellbeing. Some users have had issues such as depression, low self‐esteem, anxiety, and cyber‐addiction. Some researchers have proven that social media can increase feelings of envy, emotional exhaustion, stress levels, and reduced sleep quality. Furthermore, a mental strain caused by the misuse of this platform will lead to various serious health issues.

The negative impact of social media extends to cyberbullying, stalking, or ‘catfishing’, exposure to misinformation, and violation of one’s privacy. Social media addiction is real and it's affecting a lot of people.

The fear of missing out (FOMO) is associated with the increased use of social networks. People with a strong need for approval and fitting in suffer the most from FOMO. They constantly want to be active which becomes problematic if they’re driving or they’re with other people in a formal environment. Catfishing is also increasing exponentially. It refers to people who create a fake social media persona or profile. They steal other people’s profiles, personal information, and pictures, and make them their own. They often have a goal of making a romantic connection or scamming money from other people

Cyberbullying and stalking


Social media cyber‐bullying is a problem growing fast. It’s used to inflict pain and humiliation on its victims through posting and sharing pictures, videos, or hurtful comments on social networks.

These bullies are using social media to harass, tease, threaten, outing, stalking, and trolling targeted victims. This is mostly affecting teenagers and causing grave consequences. It has played a role as a causative factor in mental health issues and suicidal tendencies.

Because of the rising cases of cyberbullying many states have issued legal consequences to the offenders. Criminal forms of cyberbullying include harassing, making violent and/or death threats, sextortion, child pornography, stalking someone, and extortion.

It is important to learn how to manage your online presence on social media. Some experts have recommended 30 minutes or less per day as the maximum time you should spend on social media. Social media can be a huge influencer and so gaining control over it is important.

Learn to be selective in your responses, set limits, don’t worry about missing out, and be able to separate fake from reality.

It seems to me now there is no harmful effect of social networks on people, they often say more intelligent things than in life. Also, many people have jobs there now, which makes them spend a lot of time on social networks.
