Many people complain about how their day-to-day activities and mental health suffer because of a lack of sleep. However, the effects of sleep on our daily lives are more complex than we may think.

The following are some of the ways that sleep affects our day-to-day activities and mental health:

1. Sleep deprivation has been shown to lead to symptoms of depression, anxiety and irritability.

2. Poor sleep quality can also cause physical symptoms such as fatigue, headache and trouble concentrating.

3. Sleep deprivation has also been linked to increased risk for obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease due to decreased levels of insulin in your body after you stop sleeping (this is called "rebound hyperglycemia").

4. Individuals who have poor sleeping habits have been found to have an increased likelihood of developing high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes later in life (this was established in a study published by the American Journal Of Epidemiology).

5. Lack of sleep can lead to impaired glucose tolerance (where blood sugar levels remain high) which increases your risk for developing type 2 diabetes later on in life (this was shown in a study published by The Journal Of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism).
