Is giving autonomy to your staff a good management strategy?

Managing a business is something that some business owners and managers almost always demand perfection and this tends to lead them to always micro manage every task, every process to make sure it is perfect or near perfect. I am guilty of that too.

In a way, micro-managing is not good for a business organisation as it can lead to feeling of excessive control and resentment by staff. Granting autonomy to your staff entails that you give them a task or goal but allow them to choose a path they would use for that task from starting to completion. Risky right? Yes, it is.

If managed well and a balance struck, granting tasks autonomy to staff can help improve efficiency of such staff because when they know that they are responsible for choosing the path of a task, they would want to do it right. It drives innovation as staff would deploy their ingenuity to complete tasks.

Autonomy instead of micro managing is the way to go in assigning tasks to your staff in your business.

Autonomy is one of the strongest management approaches that permits employees to make choices and be responsible for their work. It enhances motivation, promotes creativity and innovation, improves job satisfaction, cultivates better decision-making abilities, makes room for flexibility and adaptability and allows for speedy problem resolution. Autonomy also instils a culture of accountability as employees take charge of their actions leading to ownership in the team. It further provides chances for workers to become leaders by showing leadership skills and taking more significant roles within the organization. By permitting autonomy in decision making processes trust developed which resulted into better relationships between managers and their subordinates thereby assuring employee empowerment. Nevertheless, it is vital to ensure that autonomy corresponds with tasks assigned, experience level of employees and skills they possess as well as goals set by a company and its values. Autonomy must then be exercised underlined by a clear communication framework within the organizational structure.
