The Nigerian oil sector has been in establishment for several numbers of years . To be more elaborate all exploration in Nigeria begin in the year 1908 by a German company called The butman corporation , and since then till date petroleum has remained a major source of government revenue in Nigeria . We must know the positive contributions of petroleum to Nigerian economy some of which include :
* Government revenue : the existence of petroleum has contributed greatly to the major source of revenue available to the government in Nigeria .
* Employment : because of the existence of petroleum in Nigeria the generation of employment by the petroleum industry has also aid the existence of job opportunities to various categories of people example geologist and oil analyst , chemical engineers , and , petroleum engineers etc .
But yet does petroleum have any negative effect on the Nigerian economy of course it does let's consider some of these negative effects :
* Environmental pollution : due to the corrosive and pungent smell of crude oil , it exploration has led to serious environmental pollution of land air and water especially in niger-Delta region of Nigeria .
* Agriculture negelection : we all know that agriculture used to be the major source of revenue in Nigeria . But when petroleum was later discovered in Nigeria agriculture in itself has been neglected by the Nigerian govt , also other sectors who initially have relevance in the Nigerian economy was also neglected as well .
