For personal and career growth, one must build a diverse professional network. Here is why:

1. Different views of things: A diverse professional network can expose you to various viewpoints, thoughts and experiences of life. Every person’s thinking can be expanded, the existing assumptions – questioned and lots of innovative problem solutions generated.

2. Access to variety of choices: One’s network enriched with diversity may make it possible for him or her to approach different opportunities such as vacancies, collaborations, partnerships or mentoring schemes. It is through other people that one gets knowledge, skills and connections which may open doors that he or she would never have thought about.

3. Learning and Development Opportunities: Interacting with people from different backgrounds and industries provides significant learning opportunities. This facilitates your understanding of other industries, acquisition of new skills, and the gaining of knowledge that can support your growth both at work and in life generally.

4. Creativity and innovation: Diversity begets creativity as well as innovation. In meeting people from various social-cultural backgrounds or areas in life, you get new ideas not known before by allowing them to see into your mind openly. It follows then that creativity will arise leading to innovations in job performance.
