But, by avoiding these top 10 social media mistakes from 2009, you MAY hasten your success on social media this year.

What are they, then?

1) Poor Visibility Over Time.

Without consistently being seen and heard with your message, it is impossible to forge a path and establish a presence on social media. Speak with Carrie Wilkerson. Timothy Carter, perhaps. IS NOT going to occur. Because of this, you MUST have a DAILY online presence in order to participate in the community and be seen and heard. A tree doesn't develop in spurts. It must exert itself consistently. The same holds true for your social media promotion.

2) Concentrating excessively on being heard.
FIRST LISTEN, THEN SPEAK. Listening to what is being said on social media, by your prospects and customers, and on social media in general. You wouldn't burst into a party or other social gathering and shout out what you wanted to talk about.

You shouldn't do either on social media. Only participate in the ongoing dialogue after you have LISTENED and LEARNED. It will be your turn to initiate the conversation.

3) Stealing from the social media community rather than giving.

Yes, there are many takers in the Web 2.0 era. NOT YOU, however. LEND first. Add value. Make recommendations. Offer guidance. Provide suggestions. Encourage others. impart news Provide Fresh Options. Express gratitude with words. But, avoid taking constantly. You'll get the cold shoulder and be called that.

Give if you Actually want to have a big impact. How does that function?

GIVE stands for Gain Influence Quickly. Giving FIRST will ensure that you never place second.

4) Refusing to join groupings.

You can experience some of the most significant learning and growth in groups. I am a part of many organizations. Why? due to two factors: 1) Other individuals teach me a lot of things.

1. Not having a plan: Failing to plan or create a strategy for your social media usage will lead to ineffective use of your time and resources. Without a plan, it’s easy to get lost in the endless stream of content and miss out on opportunities to engage with your target audience.

2. Posting too often: Posting too frequently can be perceived as spammy and turn off potential followers. Constantly pushing out content across multiple social media platforms can also overwhelm your audience and lead to an overall decrease in engagement.

3. Being too salesy: Social media should be used to build relationships with your target audience, not just to sell. People are on social media to connect with each other and share content, not to be sold to.

4. Ignoring customer service: Social media should be used to provide customer service, not just to promote your company or products. Responding to customer queries in a timely and helpful manner can help you build trust with your followers and potential customers.
