During the holiday season, a lot of people go on vacation but don't protect their homes. During the summer and winter holidays, crime rises. When you go on vacation, there are a few things you should keep in mind.

Always make it feel like you're home to strangers. During the winter, have someone shovel the snow off your stairs and out of your driveway. You could request that someone park their car in your driveway.

Inform the person who delivers your newspaper that you are not home. People will assume that you are not home if you have a pile of newspapers and other mail on your doorstep. You could also arrange for a relative or neighbor to receive your mail every day.

Introduce a clock in a portion of your rooms that turns lights on and off during various times. You can also set a timer on some televisions to turn on during prime time. If you want to keep intruders at bay when you aren't home, install motion-sensitive lighting outside your house.
