You're not alone if you've seen a line on your stomach during pregnancy. It's called the linea nigra, and it's a vertical line that appears on the belly of many pregnant women.
The latin term linea nigra literally translates to "black line." It's the term for a dark vertical line that occurs on the belly of pregnant women around the middle of their pregnancy.
Hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy cause the linea nigra. One theory is that the hormones cause your body to produce more melanin (the pigment that gives your skin its color), and this extra pigmentation manifests as a dark pregnancy line on your stomach.
It's not uncommon for a linea nigra to appear during pregnancy, and it's nothing to be concerned about. It's expected that about 75% of pregnant women will develop linea nigra at some point during their pregnancy.
Some people believe that the way the line extends over your belly can even be utilized as a baby gender predictor because it might be darker on some and lighter on others.
