What happens to the NDIS participant's AT when they die?

  • In general, the participant owns the assistive technology (AT) that the NDIS has funded for them.
  • If a rental or leasing arrangement has been with an NDIS provider, the AT has to be returned to them.
  • If the participant owns the item:
    • the AT becomes part of their estate upon their death
    • the estate manager can decide what to do with the AT
  • If the participant was using NDIS funding to rent AT, the equipment must be returned to the provider because the provider still owns it.
  • If there's a service agreement for the participant that covers the expenses of returning equipment early, the NDIS will cover those costs such as:
    • early return fees
    • shipping or delivery fees
