What is the specific job of a pharmacist?

Growing up, I heard that pharmacists produce drugs that are used to treat diseases. Growing up now, what I am seeing is different. It seems the job description of pharmacists has changed. Most of the pharmacists I have as friends have never been to a pharmaceutical agency where drugs are produced. All they do is to dispense drugs. It begs so many questions. Did they spend that much time in the university with rigorous routines just to dispense drugs? Why are Nigerian pharmacists not involved in the production of drugs? Is dispensing of drugs the core role of the pharmacists?

Someone told me that it is those that studied botany, microbiology and biochemistry that are more involved with the development of drugs. How true is this narrative? I think dispensing of drugs is a simple task that can be undertaken by just anybody. I stand to be corrected though. What's the core job of the pharmacists?
