Threadworm infection is extremely common,especially in children, the tiny white worms being seen in the faeces or around the anus. Marked perianal itching is present. The child becomes infected by swallowing the eggs(ova). Continuous reinfection takes place through the child scratching the anus and thereby infecting the hands.

TREATMENT
As most of the children and even adults in the family are usually infected with threadworms at the same time,it is most important for all members of the family to be examined and for those infected to be treated together;failing this,reinfection will take place.

(1)ERADICATION OF THE WORMS. A suitable anthelmintic(drug which kills worms) is given after the bowels have been well opened by amild purgative. Piperazine or mebendezole are the drugs of choice.

(2) PREVENTION OF REINFECTION.This is most important. The anal region. The hands must be washed after visiting the toilet. The underclothes,night attire and linen should be boiled after all infected members of the family have been treated.
