What do you think of salary deduction for lateness?

As they always say, punctuality is the soul of every business. In line with that, most business organisations demand punctuality as a basic responsibility that every staff should uphold.

As a result, business organisations have put up several measures to ensure that staff comply with the demand of punctuality when reporting to their workplaces. And one of such measures is salary deduction. A fixed amount is set to be deducted per day that a staff comes late from his or her salary.

Are you of the opinion that it is a fair practice for organisations to enforce punctuality with salary deduction for lateness? Are there other measures that an organisation can enforce punctuality without having to deduct salaries?
