Yeah one way of being rewarded in a workplace his through promotion and you have to work to earn this reward. it is always good when promotion comes with a better incentive for the person promoted. it will also encourage other people to work hard to also get promoted

To get promoted as you rightly stated needs not only to work hard but work smart you need to show that you are unique and capable of handling a new position to get yourself noticed by the manager. also again you must have a top notch communication skills to be able to interact effectively with the different hierarchy of people in the workplace or establishment but most importantly you have to show that you have all that it takes to be promoted to the next level

So one need to work hard and need to be patient and also show the right skills.

If you want to get promotions, the most important thing you should be doing is upskilling yourself. Upskilling means you learn advanced skills or new skills so that you become better on the job. Let's say you are a graphic designer, you work with a conceptualizer and copywriter to design an ad. If you upskill yourself and learn the skills related to conceptualizing and copywriting, you can do three jobs at a time, for example, you can conceptualize an ad, write a copy and design the ad at the same time. Since you are doing jobs that would be normally done by three people, you will easily get promotions. Sometimes you will have to learn entirely different skills in order to get promotions and pay raises. Let's say you are a programmer, if you are a good communicator and can pitch your ideas to your clients, you might get a promotion in your company.
