There are many oddities and surprises in the United States that can be jarring to people who have not experienced them before. For example, many countries require that you pay for your food and drink up front, while in the U.S they are used to having to flag down their waiter or waitress when they want the check.
Many countries do not allow tipping, but in America, tipping is expected of customers at most establishments. In fact, you can be refused service if you don't tip at a restaurant. The United States also has many different kinds of businesses that are very common there, but uncommon abroad.

-There are dollar stores (where everything costs one dollar) and dollar menus (at restaurants where everything on the menu costs one dollar) which are very common in the U.S., but not necessarily elsewhere.

- There are also many types of stores that sell only a specific item (for instance, there are stores that sell only candles or only shoes).

- It is possible to negotiate prices on cars and houses, but not on clothing.

-In the US, it is illegal to sell a haunted house without telling the buyer.

- It's easy to meet people in the US, but it's hard to find friends.

- Virtually everything (including service) is up for negotiation in the US.

- Americans are VERY friendly and accommodating.

- You can dress casually and still be taken seriously in the US (shorts and flip flops are OK).
