Hiring OJT or apprentice for entry level

When I was working in a commercial bank, I was tasked to handle the apprentice that we call OJT – for they come to our office for their on-the-job training. The OJTs are college students who are required to do apprenticeship of 200 hours for their diploma. I suggested to our boss that we can probably hire the OJT when they finally graduate because we had already trained them for that long period. Our boss hastily agreed and he asked me for my recommendation of 2 OJTs that we would hire after they graduate from college.

Unknown to us many companies are already doing that. The apprentice learns the job and if they are hired by another company then we tend to lose the opportunity because the OJT has already been trained on actual work. By the way, our department is IT so it is purely computer work that we teach the OJT. Another advantage of hiring an OJT is the entry level salary which is the minimum That is a lot of savings.
