How to avoid getting pregnant

Oral contraceptives, also known as birth control tablets, only function when used consistently throughout the day. Missing a dose increases your chance of becoming pregnant. Progesterone and estrogen are combined in the pill. These hormones work in concert to prevent ovulation, thicken the mucus in your cervix, and alter the lining of your uterus.
Follow the instructions on your prescription if you forget to take a medication. According to when and how many tablets you missed, it will instruct you on how to take a catch-up dose. Use a backup method of birth control in the directions.
