There are two ways to sell on Instagram and Facebook:

You set up a shop and start selling

You advertise your products and send facebook and Instagram users to you site to complete the purchase.

Sell from your page

If you want to sell through the first method, there are some requirements to follow, for example, you need to have x number of followers, you need to get approval from the platform, etc. However, the second method requires you to have ad budget and nothing else.

The third method requires you to have a huge following. If you have built huge audience, you don’t have to spend money on ads to generate sales. However, you in order to build huge following you might have to spend money on ads. It is really difficult to build following for common people. Having said that if you have patience and if you are a good content creator, you might be able to build following organically.

No matter what method you use, in order to sell on Instagram and Facebook, you need to build followers. If you have an Instagram shop or Facebook shop, you need a huge audience who regularly visit your shop and buy products. If you are trying to sell directly through your page, you need followers, the more followers you have the more chances you will have for selling products. Technically speaking you might not need to follow if you want to generate sales through ads, but when you are too dependent on ass for sales, your ad cost will have to be added to your selling price, which will increase the overall price of your product, and it will affect your sales. Therefore, the key to selling is building a following in your niche and promoting niche-related products. Selling is all about marketing and marketing will become successful only when you reach your target audience.
