Gender stereotyping is the process by which people objectify and devalue others based on their gender. Gender stereotyping can take place in both positive and negative ways; however, research has shown that women are often subjected to more gender stereotypes than men. Many of these stereotypes are associated with traditionally feminine characteristics such as being caring, emotional and nurturing. Women are also more likely to be judged based on their appearance because of what they wear or how they look.

Women who work in customer service positions are not immune to being judged based on their gender. In fact, research shows that women who work in customer service jobs are more likely than men to experience gender discrimination. This could be because customer service jobs require a higher level of empathy, sensitivity and social skills than other types of positions do. Therefore, it may be easier for customers who perceive women as less competent than men in customer service roles to assume that the female employee knows less about their product or service than does the male employee.
