What is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a condition in which the spine becomes curved from side to side.

There are two types of scoliosis:

Structural scoliosis: This is when the spine has been formed abnormally, and the curvature cannot be corrected.

Nonstructural scoliosis: This is when the spine forms normally, but it develops a curve due to factors such as trauma or muscle spasms.

Severity of Scoliosis

The severity of scoliosis depends on the degree of spinal curvature in the coronal plane (front to back). The Cobb angle measurement is used to assess this degree. An angle of less than 10 degrees is considered normal, while an angle between 25 and 40 degrees is considered severe. Severe cases can lead to osteoarthritis, pain, respiratory issues and deformities over time.

Symptoms of scoliosis include:
  • Uneven shoulders or hips
  • Uneven waist or ribs
  • One shoulder blade appears more prominent than the other one
  • A leaning towards one side
Treatment for scoliosis includes:

Observation: If a child's spinal curve measures less than 20 degrees, doctors will closely monitor the child's growth for some time. Seems you are following, you can read more here.
