When the price is ranging or trending, for new lows or highs to be formed, there must be a breakout, breakout happens when the price breaks the immediate support or resistance, this indicates the beginning of a new trend or retesting of a new support or resistance levels.

To spot a breakout you have to have horizontal lines on your chart, these lines are applicable whether the market is trending or ranging, when ever price penetrates these levels and break through them, it is known as breakout, even though breakout can be fake out, most break outs, break zones and then come back to retest before making another high or low depending on circumstances.

In trading breakouts, always pay attention and notice if the price is not coming back to retest the level, this can be done by observing the candlesticks, but the most valid advise is to allow the price to come back and retest the zone before joining the impulsive move.
