Yellow fever is a disease caused by a virus, spread through the bite of an infected female mosquito. The disease has been around for thousands of years, and was first described in 1648. It was once a major killer in Europe and the United States, but today it's rare in those places due to increased knowledge about its causes and how to prevent it.

However, yellow fever is still common in many South American and African countries. In fact, yellow fever is one of the leading causes of death from infectious diseases in Africa. There are an estimated 200,000 cases of yellow fever each year, resulting in 30,000 deaths.

The good news is that a vaccine exists that can prevent you from getting sick with yellow fever. Get vaccinated at least 10 days before you have to travel to an area where the disease is found.

To protect yourself from contracting yellow fever if you live or travel in areas where it's common:

-Use bug spray to avoid insect bites

-Wear long sleeves and pants at dawn and dusk—which are peak biting times for mosquitoes

-Sleep under a mosquito net while traveling

-Avoid the outdoors during the day when mosquitoes are motraveling or in an exposed area.
