Yes it's true to always go an extra mile at work not because you want to be noticed but because you are focused enough with the job that keeps you going all day everyday and you can't stop making little sacrifices here and there. Also like you've said it's not good to work as if you are competing with someone because it's never a competition or a race.

In my first employment which is a bank that’s where I learned that no employee is indispensable. That means no matter how good you are will not really matter at all when you leave the company. Of course, that is not 100% true but in my experience even the president is indispensable because the bank did not suffer when our president died.

Definitely, you are right. Some employment will need one going the extra mile to get noticed especially when they are other very good workers it doesn't necessarily mean one must be overzealous but work to the best of your ability. So tat when you are gone, you would be remembered for a very long time
