The most basic rule of jogging is to get yourself a decent pair of running shoes, not just a cheap pair of trainers. Trying to run in unsuitable footwear is the same as trying to cut a tree down with a blunt ax. It means you have to work so much harder. You are more likely to commit to your training if you feel comfortable in a decent pair of running shoes. My second piece of advice is to set your own fitness goals. Don't be talked into taking on more than you are capable of. In any running environment there will be people of all fitness levels. Just set your own targets and see where that leads you to.
