Motivation can be intrinsic or extrinsic depending on the individual, but in a business setting, owner has to take charge when you discover the input is being low and you know your employees can do better, you can do a lot of things to motivate your employees, like giving them a raise, creating a kind of competition between them with things like commissions on each sales etc

By keeping your employees motivated you'll be able to get value for the salary you're paying them, poorly motivated employees will hurt your business because all they care about is the reward not how to help the company succeed generally.
